Oil pulling is really just swishing oil around in your mouth. It is called pulling because when you are swishing you are pulling it in between your teeth. Many use coconut oil because of its antibacterial & antimicrobial properties but you want to get raw or unrefined (order here) so its as close to its purist form as possible. You may have noticed that the more processed coconut oils don’t really even smell like coconut….now that should tell you something.
One day while searching the web I stumbled a crossed testimonials of how cavities had been cured by oil pulling. The claims were that the cavities went away buy swishing coconut oil for 20 minutes a day for a week to 10 days preferably in the morning before eating or drinking anything. It is also said to brighten teeth and help with chronic dry mouth and bleeding gums.
Well, I was having some pain in one of my back molars and figuring it was turning into a cavity I thought it couldn’t hurt to try this ‘oil pulling’. So, I bought some extra virgin coconut oil, which is not cheap; however, it is cheaper than the dentist
I did it for about five days and the pain subsided, then I forgot to do it for a few days and the pain came back. When I started again I added a bit of tea tree oil to make it more potent. This time I did it for a week straight and the tooth pain went away and has not come back (one year later). Now I swish once a week for maintenance.
My mixture is 1/2 teaspoon tea tree oil to 1/3 cup coconut oil (tea tree oil is amazing stuff and is worth a whole article of its own). This way I only had to swish for about five minutes instead of twenty, which I never did it for that long to begin with, its just too long The tea tree oil is very strong and tastes pretty bad so it does take getting used to and never swallow it…you will hurl if you do.
It does take a few times to get used to the texture of the coconut oil going in your mouth solid and letting it melt. I wanted to gag the first few times.
I keep a closed container in the bathroom, grab a big lump on my finger, put it in my mouth and jump in the shower. Swish while showering, two birds - one stone.
