Labor Day & Black Tea Instead of Coffee

Happy Labor Day everyone!

I hope everyone is having a relaxing holiday weekend that ushers in fall and the beginning of a new school year for many of us in the U.S.  I remember growing up and this meaning we were no longer supposed to wear white, not til Memorial Day the following year.  I’m glad that has been done away with.

Labor Day - “The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.”  Read more at http://www.dol.gov/laborday/history.htm

For some time now I have been trying to move away from drinking coffee….and it has been a little difficult.  I like coffee.  I like the taste (with cream & sugar) and I like the caffeine.  However, I have found, now that I am middle aged, that one cup tends to make me jittery if I do any physical work after drinking it.  And since I do physical work for a living that means I always feel jittery unless I eat after drinking the coffee (instead of before) which is rarely the case.

So between the jitters and knowing that coffee isn’t all that good for me (due to the evil designs of men in the last days concerning our food supply….) I have to rid myself of this addiction and that is exactly what it is………an addiction.  So lately, I have been giving black tea a try.

I have posted my recipe for Vanilla Chai Tea Concentrate that made about a half gallon but lately I have been making myself single serving amounts to take with me on the go using a travel french press.  And no, I’m not being compensated by Bodum, this just happens to be the exact travel press I have.

I put all the herbs and tea bags at the bottom, add water, put the top with the attached press on, let steep for five minutes and away we go.

Here is how I make my to-go Chai Tea coffee replacement.

1 whole star anise

1 peppercorn

pinch of brown sugar

splash of vanilla extract

1 - 1/4 inch wide slice of ginger

2 cardamon pods slightly crushed

2 juniper berries

1 black tea bag

1/4 to 1/3 cup milk

2 inch long piece cinnamon stick

1 allspice slightly crushed

2 T honey

Put all in the bottom of travel press, fill with boiling water, put the top on, let steep for a bit then your ready to take it on the road!

Hope you had a wonderful Labour Day! I also love coffee, but limit myself to one or two cups a day for the same reason. A little is lovely, but too much is bad news! #alittlebitofeverything

Hi Mary, I love tea and have several different varieties on hand. I drink it black with a little cold water added to the boiling water. I find it such a refreshing drink, however I do like my morning coffee. Thanks for this post and sharing with us at #AnythingGoes link up.
