The best upcoming PS5 games: 2023 and beyond

The PlayStation 5 has been out for some time now, and its reception has been mostly positive. It includes lots of quality-of-life improvements over its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, such as faster load times, a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard disk drive (HDD), and an improved controller in the form of the new DualSense. However, a console is only as good as the games available on it, and thankfully, the PS5 has you covered on that front as well.

While the machine already has a worthy library of great PS5 games, there are even more to look forward to, with some releasing as soon as this month, while others are still years away. In the video game world, it’s not uncommon to be aware of games that are still several years out from release. It’s also normal for a new game to be revealed and launched within just a couple of months. In this comprehensive list, we’ll go through the major PS5 releases scheduled for 2023 and speculate on future games.

These are the best upcoming PS5 games to look forward to.

Serving as a remake of the 2005 original, Resident Evil 4 aims to reimagine Leon Kennedy’s grueling adventure as he searches for the president’s missing daughter. This won’t play out like other Resident Evil games, as the deadly enemies aren’t zombies but infected villagers who are just as terrifying as the undead. This game seems like it will follow in the footsteps of the Resident Evil 2 remake, giving us the same story with gameplay improvements and 4K visuals for modern consoles. It’ll launch in March 2023.

We already had a great spinoff with Minecraft Dungeons, but now Mojang will let us become legends with this new action and story-focused experience in the familiar world of blocks, Creepers, and Pigmen. Minecraft Legends looks to be the most ambitious side project for the series yet, appearing to be mainly third-person and have a slightly more stylized art style, plus a story that promises to be far more important than anything else we’ve seen in that universe.

After being in development hell for the better part of a decade, Dead Island 2 will finally launch in 2023. The game was first revealed at E3 2014 and has since undergone numerous developer changes. Currently, Dambuster Studios is leading development, and based on the game’s recent latestreveal, it seems Dead Island 2 is nearing completion. This installment will be comically violent, with a slew of RPG mechanics and cooperative play, building upon the features from the original 2011 game. The sequel’s tone seems to have remained consistent throughout its development, with an emphasis on ridiculousness rather than a grounded take on a zombie story.

During the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Sony finally revealed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the follow-up to one of 2018’s best games. We knew it was inevitable there would be a sequel, but it was nice to finally receive some confirmation of this. The game isn’t going to launch until 2023, but there’s a lot to be excited about based on the announcement trailer. For one, we know Miles Morales will fight alongside Peter Parker. It’s unclear how this will work, though — if we’ll get to play as one or the other, or both — but either way, we’ll be in for a good time. We also know Venom will make an appearance, as shown in the trailer, but fans also pointed out that Kraven the Hunter will likely play a part, as well. The character can be heard narrating the trailer. It’ll be a while before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is ready to play, but judging by this list, there’s no shortage of games to play in the meantime.

One of the greatest surprises during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase was the reveal of Marvel’s Wolverine, a project in development by Insomniac Games. That’s right, the studio is juggling Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and this game simultaneously, which just goes to show how impressive the team is. This one is even earlier in development than Spider-Man 2 and doesn’t have a release window just yet. It’s unclear if it will tie to the Spider-Man games or if it will be its own separate story — though we’re inclined to believe they’ll be connected.
