Apple Arcade adds over 30 new games in its biggest expansion ever

Apple Arcade got a surprise update bringing 30 new games to the platform. The update brings much-anticipated games like Fantasian to the platform, as well as mobile classics.

The update is a significant overhaul for Apple’s gaming subscription service. Apple’s strategy initially revolved around launching new, original games on the platform. The new additions bring the service’s collection of games up past 180.

The new update adds two new categories to the service: Timeless Classics and App Store Greats. Timeless Classics brings basic games to iOS devices, such as Solitaire and Backgammon. The App Store Greats category includes hit mobile games like Monument Valley and Fruit Ninja Classic.

The update features new, exclusive Arcade Originals. That list includes some high-profile releases, such as PlatinumGames’ World of Demons, NBA 2K21 Arcade Edition, and a new take on The Oregon Trail. The biggest new addition is Fantasian, the long-awaited RPG by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi.

The update comes after reports that Apple was planning a major strategic shift for the service. Last year, Bloomberg reported that the company was canceling some of its deals with developers. The move was reportedly part of an effort to refocus on user engagement on the service. The addition of old standby mobile games seems to support that theory, though the update does feature plenty of less hook-heavy new releases.

Apple Arcade is available for $5 a month with a one-month free trial. The service is included in the Apple One service as well, with monthly prices starting at $15.

2023 is already an excellent year for rhythm games
The heroes of Hi-Fi Rush stand together.

Just days into 2023, my podcast co-hosts and I fell into a discussion about rhythm games. In talking about the golden age of music games like Guitar Hero, we began to mourn for a genre that had seemingly fallen out of fashion among mainstream audiences. Sure, niche indies like Melatonin still release regularly and Ubisoft’s Rocksmith quietly exists, but we were left to wonder if the genre was long past its peak.

I’ve never seen a video game conversation age so poorly so fast. Now two full months into the year, 2023 has already been a godsend for fans of rhythm games. That was initially thanks to Tango Gameworks’ excellent Hi-Fi Rush, but that’s only the most high-profile example. Between an excellent Final Fantasy title, indie hidden gems, and a wealth of VR music games getting a second life thanks to PlayStation VR2, 2023 is shaping up to be the year of the rhythm game.
Feel the beat
For music game aficionados, 2023 started off on the strongest note possible thanks to Hi-Fi Rush. The Game Pass title is a character-action game, not unlike Devil May Cry, but with a unique musical twist: every action is more effective when performed to the beat of the game’s soundtrack. While music-based action games aren’t new to gaming (see last year’s Metal: Hellsinger), Hi-Fi Rush cracked the genre wide open and discovered mainstream success.

10 essential tips for Arena Mode in Apex Legends

A few years ago, it was hard to find any decent free-to-play games that weren't MMORPGs, and good free first-person shooter (FPS) games were almost non-existent. The few that were around usually came from less-than-reputable sources and usually experienced a host of bugs and connectivity issues.

With battle royale games offering a boon to the free-to-play model, though, AAA studios have started releasing high-quality, free FPS games. Games like Warframe paved the way for Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.

While Microsoft was been hit with criticism for the Xbox Series X's slow-growing exclusive lineup -- several highly anticipated titles like Bethesda's Starfield and co-op shooter Redfall have been pushed to later in 2023 -- the company is still delivering one of the best deals in gaming: Xbox Game Pass.

Game Pass gives gamers access to a massive library of games that includes throwback hits, brand new titles on release day, and indie darlings. These games can be played on Xbox consoles, PC, mobile, and even Steam Deck.
